From improving your job prospects to boosting the size of your brain, language skills could be your ticket to ride. Save the Student share their insights with Chatterbox.
"I chose to learn Arabic because I didn’t want language to be a barrier between me and news in the Middle East - as a reporter, I didn’t want to miss anyone's story." - The FT's Chloe Cornish shares her insights with Chatterbox.
“I do have very many professions. I don’t know where to start... my actual profession is I’m an actress and filmmaker in the Indian film industry. I’m a producer, editor, camerawoman, and scriptwriter.”
Kainaaz is a multi-talented woman. She was raised in India, and speaks four different Indian languages - Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Gujarati - alongside her mother tongue, Farsi. Rather annoyingly, these languages seem to have come naturally to her! As a language learner myself, I envy her - and asked how she managed it.
“Interaction is the best way by far – conversing with people, meeting different people, of different cultures, different places – would really help with learning the language, because then you are forced to speak it, you have no choice.”
And how does such an accomplished and motivated person find life in the UK?
“I didn’t bring anything except myself, and a little suitcase. The way we flee our country – it’s not something that you can bring stuff with you. I had to leave everything behind.
“I had been to the UK many times, with filmmaking and acting. Then, it was different, because I came as a different person I did things as a different person. Now, I am treated differently, I feel differently. But I am grateful that I am in a country where I am safe."
Kainaaz works with Chatterbox to help students of Farsi improve their confidence in fluency. I asked why she got in touch.
"The word Chatterbox itself! I should say that – I love that word. When I started reading more about Chatterbox after the name itself, it interested me a lot, knowing the kind of activities that you guys were doing. Basically, I think you guys are doing a fantastic job by helping asylum seekers and refugees. I wanted to be a part of that."
